The Weight of the World opens October 20, 2021 at TAG Gallery, 5458 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036. TAG is open 1pm-7pm, Wed-Sun
Lynne Russo’s new conceptual art exhibition, ‘The Weight of the World,’ uses clothes from the artist’s own closet as her medium. As a breast cancer survivor in 2020/initial pandemic era, Russo has since lost a significant amount of weight in an effort to regain her health, and is using her old wardrobe in the exhibition to convey the physical weight lost, as well as the emotional weight of getting treatment for cancer during a world pandemic.
“I knew I wanted to use all the clothes that were piling up as I worked to regain my health and lose weight, but it was a fascinating journey to see how the fabric project would come together,” said Russo. “I ended up adhering the clothes to fences—it just represented how closed off I felt when I needed to lose weight, and also how isolating it was getting treatment during a pandemic. Both things felt like I was walled off from the world.”
‘The Weight of the World,’ is a collection of 8 new works by artist Lynne Russo, who doesn’t view her process as a means to an end. Instead, the physical act of creating is an essential element of the work. “I believe the act of creation is important as the result, and feel passionately that the process and the finished piece can’t be separated.”
