In 2023, TAG issued a “No AI” artwork policy for our Open, Juried invitational exhibitions. Although we invite anyone over the age of 18 with any skill level to submit artwork, TAG Gallery does not want artists competing against AI-generated content for TAG’s juried invitationals.

TAG Gallery offers awards based on the following criteria established by our President, Bob Chew:

1.             Skill using the medium

2.             Relevant content

3.             That “something” special (possibly: human genius)

While artificial intelligence is generated from imaginative words, the images are completely fabricated by data, with no regard to established copyrights. The AI process establishes every element of the generated image’s composition: the forms, lighting, shadows, and faux mediums.

In contrast, Digital and Video artists incorporate curated elements over time using human decision-making, even when they copy established images, and the artists are always subject to copyright laws. Human imagination and decisions, development of line, collaged and curated forms, composition, and a natural copyright, distinguish the Digital and Video artist’s images from data-processed AI images.

An AI image can be a starting point for digitally manipulated artwork, however, artists are responsible to note that a digital collage or manipulation is sourced from AI-generated images.
