David Phelps has worked, lived and studied in Los Angeles, New York, Paris and Mexico. Currently, Los Angeles is his home.
“My work has been greatly informed by the arts and culture of Mexico. Initiated by years as a student and renewed over time with return visits. The country has remained a source of deep inspiration. My paintings are studies of perspective and light. Images arrive from an internal emotional space. Using elements of architecture, I explore themes of memory. Doors and windows are employed as metaphors opening ourselves to thoughts, dreams and meditations. The structural frame within a frame approach focuses the viewer on the immediate subject, creating a sense of wonder and exploration.” - David Phelps
