Eric Sanders (b. 1963 in Philadelphia, PA) is a painter based in Manhattan Beach, California. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Sanders learned to paint from his father, who was an accomplished amateur painter. Sanders painted throughout his childhood and into early adulthood when he focused his attention on establishing and building a career as an entrepreneur. After thirty years in business, Sanders sold his company in 2014 and returned to making art. Since then, Sanders’s work has been exhibited in four one-person exhibitions, and he has participated in group shows, art fairs, and benefit auctions.
Artist Statement
I am an artist based in Manhattan Beach, California, where I make paintings, works on paper, and digital images. I grew up on the east coast in a house filled with paintings made by my father. When I was six years old, my father began teaching me to paint. As I got older, my father brought me to museums and shared his passion for and knowledge of art with me, which made an indelible impression on me that I carry through to my own practice today. My work is informed both by the intimate proximity of art in my everyday life as a child and my profound respect for the canon of art history. However, as a largely self-taught artist, I am also interested in visual languages that exist outside of the boundaries of art history. In my studio, I engage the atelier model of learning through the active study of art historical movements, using oil on canvas, drawing, collage, and printmaking to deepen my skills while also experimenting with new media. By combining traditional methods and experiments with digital image-making tools, I strive to find a voice that honors the ground-breaking artists of the past while creating a visual language of my own that reflects and responds to the present moment.
