Maryam Salk

About

Maryam Salk is a self-taught painter based in Southern California. She was raised in Dubai and studied Fine Art at the American University of Paris prior to completing a degree in Interior Design at FIDM in Los Angeles. Painting from an early age, she started embracing her synesthesia to create artwork that explores the feeling of a sound and a moment, focusing on the unseen rather than the seen. Her love of water and the ocean interweaves itself in her process and her work, with saturated hues and softness of form being recurring themes in her pieces.

Artist Statement

My art is a reflection of both my own internal universe, and the world heard and felt but not seen. It is a channel for me to explore and express the colours and shapes of music and the beauty that surrounds us. Travel, old-school glamour and music are very inspirational for me, as are the beach and the ocean, particularly the blue hues of the Aegean.

When I hear a song or feel something, I can visualise it as colours and shapes. Through my use of free-flowing forms and vibrant hues, I seek to capture a glimpse of a moment in time, a feeling, and not something visual. My work often centres around the idea of creating from the loving soul, not the calculating soul, and I am particularly drawn to the ephemeral nature of a memory and how I can capture that via colour and form.
